Party Time!

Last weekend, Todd and I were invited to a costume party. The theme was Mexican/Awesome and Todd and I pulled off both! : )

Staying with the Mexican theme, we dressed as calacas (as depicted in the Mexican celebration of “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead)).

Todd found his hat and cane at a thrift store and I also found my lace at a thrift store and made my flowers from some fabric I already had. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to find face paint here, apparently it's a very common thing to have at parties. The party was fun and we even got to try our turn at hitting a homemade piƱata!

A weekend in Scotland

The weekend of the Royal Wedding Todd and I traveled with some friends just over the English border into Scotland where we rented a large farm house for an extended weekend.

We arrived on Friday in time to watch the wedding on TV, which was great because most of us wouldn’t have been able to watch it, since we don’t pay our TV tax (sort of like cable, but you just have to pay the tax in order to plug your cable wire into the TV- don’t get me started).

There were 11 adults and 8 kids in all who stayed at the huge house. With a stream below the grounds and settled in the middle of many sheep farms, it was a perfect getaway. We spent the days there hanging around the house, walking, reading, playing croquet and ping pong, and sitting outside in the sun. At night, after all the kids were asleep, we would start the bonfire (aka grill) and sit around and talk. Scotland has many more hills than what we have in Durham, so we hiked up a small one to catch a better view from the top. It was so wickedly windy (my guess was 50mph) at the top that we couldn’t stand to stay there very long, so back down we went.Behind us is what we think is an ancient mound from prehistoric times, but of course, there was no signs telling us since it was in the middle of a cow pasture!

We all had a really fun time at the big house and while we’ll be sad to see two of the families we went with move back to the States next month, we had fun making memories with them!

More pictures from my garden

Here are just a few of the flowers that are coming up in my back yard!

And, of course, here's my newly planted vegetable garden!

Hopefully, we'll have some peppers, tomatoes and cherry tomatoes this summer!
